What We Make Here

Inspired by how the static nature of art in museums is juxtaposed with the constant movement of the people viewing the art, this documentary explores how we create art, make meaning from it and make meaning in the world.

During my semester in Rome (Spring 2024) I was excited to work as cinematographer and director in a small team of three to create a documentary in Italy when we were all still learning Italian. My teammates and I researched Rome’s rich art history, the nature of movement vs stationary objects and how cultural perceptions impact the way we view items that appear to be non-shifting. We reached out to art studios, small museums and artists in Rome, prepared shoot dates and research locations.

Gabrielle, artist and gallery owner, creates movable art that is concerned with how we find meaning in the world and the universality of elements in language.  The director and artists at the mosaic Studio Cassio contemplate how art has changed and continues to shift with cultural changes.
